Pinterest is a photo sharing social media platform where members create virtual albums around particular themes. In other words, they “Pin” their “In-terests.” Their pins are virtual images (photos, graphics, illustrations) collected and placed on virtual pinboards.
Think of refrigerator magnets and your Mom decorating the fridge with your prized drawings, or a corkboard in your bedroom where you pinned all things wonderful: that outrageous dress you swooned over or awesome car you were aching to drive.
Used as strictly a social site, you can curate and share the things that inspire you, things that you love and find interesting, with friends and family. You can also discover new things that have been hand-picked by people who share your interests.
As a business or branding platform, pinboards can be used directly as product catalogues, or more subtly and creatively to brand you and your business.
Pinterest’s ease of use for visually bookmarking, organizing and sharing things has made it a huge hit among individuals and businesses alike. It‘s an easy site for even a computer-challenged grandma to access.
At this time, the members are primarily female, well educated with well-honed tastes in food, the arts, fashion, beauty and all things esthetic. The site is attracting artists, photographers and DIYers in droves.
When I first logged onto Pinterest, I had the feeling that I was looking at a high quality, full color, magazine and was flipping through page after page of fabulous images. Some were linked to information, interesting blogs and websites, others to commercial sites.
New as social media sites go, Pinterest was launched in March of 2010. By August 2011, Time magazine listed Pinterest among the “50 Best Websites of 2011,”and by December 2011, the site entered the top 10 social networks, with 11 million total weekly visits. In January 2012 Pinterest drove more referral traffic to retailers than LinkedIn, YouTube, and Google.
The fastest growing site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark, Pinterest won’t say how many users it has. But ComScore reports Pinterest grew to about 23 million users in July, 2012.
Now with the new, quick, no invitation needed signup, and mobile apps new versions of its service for Android, smartphones, and for the iPad, Pinterest continues to come up fast on the rail.
It’s becoming more and more obvious that Pinterest is the next social commerce game changer
Why give Pinterest a try? Because it’s a proven way to drive traffic and its popularity is exploding like fireworks on the Fourth of July.
WHAT READERS ARE SAYING!
This guide told me everything I wanted to know about Pinterest, from how to sign up to a total tour of the Pinterest site. It’s an easy site, but I really like precise information and this guide has got it. But way more than that, it really gave me so many ideas about how to market myself that my head is buzzing. I even know what to stay away from. Excellent information.
